The Ministry of Restraint

Throughout history, God has raised up servants to preserve His purposes on Earth, chosen to stand against the advance of evil and deception. Before darkness can move beyond its appointed boundaries, the Lord establishes barriers and governing authorities to contain its influence and prevent its premature manifestation.

Paul alluded to this mystery when he wrote, “And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time” (2 Thess. 2:6). The mystery of lawlessness was already at work in Paul’s day, yet it was restrained until the appointed time set by God. This reveals a profound principle that runs throughout redemptive history: evil is not allowed to advance unchecked. God Himself sets limits, times, seasons, and boundaries beyond which darkness cannot pass until He allows.

“For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.” 2 Thessalonians 2:7

As I pondered this passage, I received a significant revelation. The Holy Spirit, who is indeed the Restrainer, has prepared specific vessels for specific seasons throughout history to carry out the Ministry of Restraint. They are called to restrain and release, to bind and to loose, to tear down and to build up, thereby securing God’s architectural plans for that dispensation and ensuring that His will stands. They share a common characteristic: they have been supernaturally delivered from fear of man or of demons. Like Joshua and Caleb, they have a unique disposition marked by a heart of devotion to God at all costs. Their stance is “We will never surrender!”

These are servants of God who move on the offensive, always taking ground. They fully understand that there is a noble and Divine Kingdom cause! They are now emerging from their caves of preparation to take their place in history. They are not moved or shaken by what they see, by circumstances, or by what men try to do. They understand the One they serve, who sits in the Heavens and laughs at the enemy’s plots. They are fully aware of the end prepared by God for principalities and powers. These Instruments of Restraint in God’s hands. They stand with God, making known to principalities the power and wisdom of God!

The Scriptures reveal many forms of restraint. God raised Joseph to preserve nations during famine, Moses to restrain Pharaoh’s oppression, Esther to halt the destruction of the Jewish people, and Daniel to stand against the powers that shape empires. Nations, governments, kings, prophets, and the angelic hosts have served as instruments through which God has restrained darkness and preserved His redemptive purposes.

In every generation, the battle between righteousness and lawlessness intensifies, and during seasons of great transition, the need for restraint becomes even more critical. As nations increasingly abandon biblical foundations and embrace deception, the forces of lawlessness seek to extend their influence across the Earth. The enemy continually seeks to move beyond his allotted boundary to advance his agenda. Yet God alone determines times. As Daniel declared, He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings. The ages unfold according to divine appointment, not satanic initiative.

The Ministry of Restraint precedes the height of lawlessness in every dispensation. Before mayhem reaches its climax, God will bring forth a testimony of righteousness. He secures His purposes before the next stage of His redemptive plan unfolds. In the hour of the conclusion of the ages, it is God who sets the stage and lays the groundwork for the final battles of the age.

Transitional leaders will arise as Instruments of Restraint in the completion and fullness of God’s Glory. They stand with God putting to flight the forces of evil by His mighty power until the appointed time. Hammered into gold by the hand of the living God, they will move in power and authority, released as an Apostolic army of leaders and saints to withstand evil. They are prepared and will say, as Micah did, “But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the LORD, and of justice and might.”

In every previous dispensation, God brought forth individual, national, governmental, ecclesiastical, and angelic restrainers. The Holy Spirit has always been the Ultimate Restrainer, working through vessels, institutions, nations, and heavenly hosts to secure God’s purposes in history. In the era of summation, He is raising a corporate Company of Restraint. This company will not consist of one man or a handful of leaders. A vast army of mature sons and daughters, clothed in glory and moving in the governmental authority of the Kingdom, is coming. They will stand and function as spiritual fortifications on Earth. Through prayer, obedience, testimony, righteousness, and governmental authority in Messiah, they resist the advance of darkness until God’s purposes are fulfilled and His final harvest is gathered.

There are times measured and marked for God’s divine strategic purposes. Within these times, systems are torn down while others are established and brought forth, uniquely designed and measured as the spiritual architecture for that time. The closing age will have its own dynamic, marked and defined as an era of conclusion—the season for a completing work in God’s people. He is the Author and He is the Finisher of our faith. Recently, I heard the Lord say,  to pray for the Spirit of Completion regarding the work I was doing,. I have since found myself completing numerous projects at an accelerated pace.

God’s endgame, which He is working towards, is coming into view: a procession of glorious sons and daughters stepping onto the world stage to establish the platform for the King’s arrival. As the enemy tries to encroach upon this holy and divine work, prepared instruments of restraint are being called forth to resist their advance.

In every dispensation, God has His instruments of restraint prepared to accomplish His will. They rise in the mould of Deborah, Gideon, Moses, Joshua, and Caleb—ones who speak to power without fear and carry the authority to establish and implement the will of God in their assigned time and sphere.

For the dispensation that closes the age, it will not be one or a few instruments of war brought forth; it will be a vast army called to carry out the will of God, as evil is held in check by the power of their faith in a faithful God.

The battles will be fierce, but the faith of these vessels will not only withstand these malevolent forces; it will push them back, putting them to flight. The level of restraint required has become critical to God’s purposes, as the enemy knows his time is short and moves to seize control when lawlessness abounds. Evil will be resisted and held at bay by the faith of a people who know their God, trust His purposes, and do exploits.

God still has work to accomplish before His Son’s return. He is preparing a spiritual house, a glorious Bride, and a mature people through whom His nature and authority are revealed on Earth. If you are alive in this hour and belong to Christ, you have been called for such a time as this. You are called to participate in the Ministry of Restraint as Instruments of Restraint.

Jesus declared: “Who has performed and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD, am the first; and with the last I am He.” (Isa. 41:4)

Every generation has its heroes—history-makers who turn the world upside down. This is such a generation, …for those who will heed the Call!

Paul showed that the last-day generation was set apart for something more glorious:

“…God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.” Hebrews 11:40

God will unveil to this final generation things the prophets of old longed to see—A generation called to be builders of the spiritual structure of the age, to hold the Divine and to stand until the purposes of God are fulfilled.

Ministers of Restraint will arise in this hour to declare to the powers of darkness: Access denied. Your time has not yet come. You will not have my family. You will not have my city. You will not have my nation.

Before the revealing of the lawless one …comes the Ministry of Restraint.

Before the climax of lawlessness …comes the Testimony of Righteousness.

Before the final Harvest …comes the emergence of a Glorious Company clothed in the authority and nature of Christ.
